Sending an Email as Another Person or Mailbox

Step-by-step

Send As in Outlook for Windows

1. In Outlook, act as if you are going to send a new email

2. You should see "Send", "From", "To", "CC", and "BCC", if you do not, see "From" or "BCC", the next couple of steps will go over this

3. To enable "From" and "BCC", click the "Options" tab at the top of the new email

4. Under the "Options" tab, click "BCC" and "From", you should now see those options when composing a new email

5. Select the "From" drop down

6. Select "Other email address" or if the address you already have access to Send As automatically populates, select it

7. If you selected "Other email address", type in the email address

8. Continue composing the email as you normally would

9. The message will now be sent as or on behalf of the mailbox you select. "Send As" or Send on Behalf" is determined by the permissions that were set for your account.


Send As in Outlook for Mac

1. Compose a new email in Outlook

2. The "From" field should automatically be there

3. Select the "From" dropdown, any mailbox or distribution group you have access to send as or send on behalf should automatically be there, select the proper address you wish to send from

4. Finish composing the email as you normally would


Send As in Outlook Web Access (OWA)

1. Login to mail.westernu.edu

2. Compose a new email

3. If you do not see "From" above the "To" field, click the ellipsis at the top of the message and select "Show From"

4. To select the mailbox or distribution group you wish to send as, click the "From" drop down. It should be automatically populated with mailboxes you can send as

5. Finish composing the email as you normally would

Additional Information

  • If you do not have access to Send As or on Behalf, the mailbox will not show up.
  • If you send a message as someone, the sent email will show up in YOUR sent items, not the sent items of the account you sent as.
  • Troubleshooting:
  • If you cannot send as, it's likely you don't have access to. Please contact Technical Support so we can check.
  • We may require that you get permission to Send As from a manager or supervisor before granting access.
