Clearing the Browser Cache / Removing Saved Passwords

Before You Start

Clearing the cache of a web browser can help resolve access and performance issues. Please be aware that clearing the cache can sometimes also delete the following:

  • Saved passwords
  • Address bar predictions and auto-complete searches
  • Shopping cart contents, saved website data, etc.

Google Chrome

  1. In the browser bar, enter the following:
    1. chrome://settings/clearBrowserData
  2. At the top of the Clear browsing data window, click the Advanced tab
  3. Select the top 4 options:
    1. Broswing History
    2. Download History
    3. Cookies and other site data
    4. Cached images and files
  4. In the Time Range drop-down, select All Time
  5. Click Clear Data
  6. Quit and re-open all open windows

Firefox

  1. From the History menu, select Clear Recent History
    1. If the menu bar is hidden, press Alt to make it visible.
  2. From the Time range to clear: drop-down menu, select Everything.
  3. Next to Details, click the down arrow and select all items.
  4. Click Clear Now.
  5. Exit/quit all browser windows and re-open the browser.

Microsoft Edge

  1. In the top right, click the Hub icon (looks like star with three horizontal lines).
  2. Click the History icon (looks like a clock), and then select Clear all history.
  3. Select the follwing:
    1. Browsing history
    2. Cookies and saved website data
    3. Cached data and files.
  4. Click Clear.
  5. After the "All Clear!" message appears, exit/quit all browser windows and re-open the browser.

Internet Explorer 11

  1. Select Tools > Safety > Delete browsing history....
    1. If the menu bar is hidden, press Alt to make it visible.
  2. Deselect Preserve Favorites website data 
  3. Select the following:
    1. Temporary Internet files or Temporary Internet files and website files
    2. Cookies or Cookies and website data
    3. History
  4. Click Delete. You will see a confirmation at the bottom of the window when the process is complete.
  5. Exit/quit all browser windows and re-open the browser.

Safari 8 and later

  1. From the Safari menu select Clear History... or Clear History and Website Data....
  2. Select the desired time range, and then click Clear History.
  3. Go to Safari > Quit Safari or press Command-Q to exit the browser completely.

 

Removing Saved Passwords

Google Chrome

  1. Open Chrome
  2. Navigate to the Settings Menu at the top right of the window (three vertical dots) 
  3. Click Settings
  4. On the left menu, click Autofill 
  5. Click Password Manager 
  6. Look for the Saved Passwords section
  7. Find westernu.edu sites in the left column
  8. Click the Options menu to the right of the westernu.edu site 
  9. Click Remove
  10. Restart Chrome

 

Firefox

  1. Open Firefox
  2. Navigate to the Settings Menu at the top right of the window (three horizontal lines)
  3. Click Settings
  4. On the left menu, click Privacy & Security
  5. Scroll down and find the Logins and Passwords section
  6. Click Saved Logins 
  7. Find westernu.edu sites (adfs.westernu.edu, jprod.westernu.edu, etc.) in the left column 
  8. Click the site and remove the password 
  9. Click Remove once more to remove the password
  10. Restart Firefox

 

Safari

  1. Open Safari
  2. Navigate to Safari at the top of the screen
  3. Click on Preferences
  4. Click on Passwords
  5. You will be prompted to enter your Macbook credentials
  6. Search westernu.edu
  7. Select westernu.edu and hit the minus (-) button towards the bottom left hand of the window
  8. Click Delete Password
  9. Restart Safari

 

Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Microsoft Edge
  2. Navigate to the settings menu at the top right of the window (three horizontal dots) 
  3. Click on Settings
  4. In the Profiles menu, click on Passwords 
  5. Find westernu.edu sites (adfs.westernu.edu, jprod.westernu.edu, etc.) in the Website column
  6. Click the three horizontal dots to the right of the westernu.edu site 
  7. Click delete
  8. Restart Edge
