Reference - IT EcoSystem - Application Types

  • This is to provide an explanation of each Application Type used within the IT EcoSystem.

Application Type

Communication Software is selected for applications and software programs designed for the specific purpose of communication.

Database Software is selected for applications and software programs designed for housing, editing, and maintaining structured files and records.

Department Specific is selected for applications designed and/or used by only WesternU departments.  These applications may be distinct for a single department or utilized by multiple departments.

Desktop Publishing Software is selected for applications and software programs used to assist in the creation of graphic design, video editing, web development, photography, and other visual compositions.

Enterprise Application, also known as Enterprise Application Software is selected for any computer software utilized to satisfy the needs of the entire WesternU institution rather than individual users.

Internet Browser is selected for applications used to view websites.

Mobile Application is selected for application software specifically designed to run on any mobile device.

Mobile Device is selected for electronic equipment used for the distinct purpose of being portable. This includes, but is not limited to, tablets, e-readers, and smartphones.

Presentation Software is selected for applications and software programs used to create slide shows, graphics, audio clips, and videos that will accompany a speech, lecture, or public presentation.

Security Software is selected for applications and software programs designed for the distinct purpose of providing security and/or assisting with security factions. This includes, but is not limited to, physical security, building security, and cybersecurity.

Utility Software is selected for applications and software programs designed to help analyze, configure, maintain, and/or add functionality in order to improve mechanical performance. This includes, but is not limited to, supporting computers, computer infrastructure, or maintenance appliances.

Web Application is selected for applications and computer programs that assist users in performing a task through the use of the Internet.

Website is selected for any online location connected to the Internet that houses a web page or a collection of web pages. These websites can be those that are accessible within or outside WesternU’s firewall. Websites included in the IT EcoSystem are ones either created specifically for WesternU or those used for a distinct job function. The IT Ecosystem does not house websites visited for research or general use.
