How do I install, configure, and use GlobalProtect to access my computer and WesternU resources when off campus?
- Users that would like to use GlobalProtect will need to complete both the Remote Access Request and MFA Setup

Client Download and Install
- Users on a WesternU computer can find the software in the Software Center application.
- Open the start menu and search for Software Center
- Once opened, look for the GlobalProtect Client and click "Install"
- Skip to step 6 below
- The below steps require Administrative Rights on your computer.
- Log in to the Global Protect Portal
- https://remote.westernu.edu/global-protect/getsoftwarepage.esp
- Select the appropriate installer for your operating system, most Windows computers are 64-bit.
- Save the file to your computer. Once downloaded you can double-click to run the installer.
- Follow the prompts to complete the installation, clicking Next when prompted.
- If a screen appears asking to Repair, Modify, or Uninstall GlobalProtect then the program is already on your computer. You may skip to Connecting to WesternU below.
- Once the installation is complete the GlobalProtect Panel will automatically open. A new icon will also be added to the notification area of your task bar.
- On the GlobalProtect Panel enter remote.westernu.edu into the Portal field and then click Connect.
Connecting to WesternU
- If GlobalProtect is not in the taskbar it can be launched from the Start menu.
- Click on the GlobalProtect icon from the taskbar, in the application window click Connect.
- If prompted for a portal enter remote.westernu.edu
- You will be prompted for your login information, make sure to enter your full WesternU email address. Example: username@westernu.edu
- Where "username" is YOUR individual WesternU username
- Enter your password and click Sign In, you will then be prompted for a one-time password using your chosen MFA Method (Text, Authentication App, Etc.)
- Once connected the icon will show a green checkmark and state Connected.
Using Remote Desktop
- Press the Start button and type Remote Desktop Connection
- Select the Remote Desktop Connection application from the start menu.
- Enter the fully qualified name of the WesternU computer in the Computer field. E.g. TS001-P.westernu.edu
- Make any additional changes (optional) and then click the Connect button.
- When entering credentials use the format westernu.edu\username (where "username is YOUR username)
Please ensure that you disconnect from the VPN when finished with the remote session by clicking the GlobalProtect icon and clicking Disconnect.
How to use and configure GlobalProtect (Mac)
Client Download and Install
- Users on a WesternU computer can find the software in the Self Service Application
- The application can found in the Applications list in finder, or a Spotlight search
- Find and select the GlobalProtect Client, and click "Install"
- Skip to step 6 below
- The below steps require Administrative Rights.
- Log in to the Global Protect Portal
- https://remote.westernu.edu/global-protect/getsoftwarepage.esp
- Select the installer for MacOS
- Save the file to your computer. Once downloaded you can double-click to open the file and run the installer.
- Follow the prompts to complete the installation, clicking Next when prompted.
- Once the installation is complete the GlobalProtect Panel will automatically open. A new icon will also be added to the notification area of your task bar.
- On the GlobalProtect Panel enter remote.westernu.edu into the Portal field and then click Connect.
Connecting to WesternU

- If your computer is MacOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or higher, you will need to accept the application before you can sign in
- Open the Apple menu and select System Preferences
- Click the Security and Privacy
- Click Allow next to "System software from developer 'Palo Alto Networks' was blocked from loading"
- Enter your password and click Sign In, you will then be prompted for a one-time password using your chosen MFA Method (Text, Authentication App, Etc.)
- Once connected the icon will show a green checkmark and state Connected.
Using Remote Desktop
- Open the Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 application. If it is not currently on your computer, install it from the Mac App Store

- Click the “+” or Add Desktop
- Enter the fully qualified name of the WesternU computer in the Computer field. E.g. TS001-P.westernu.edu and click Save
- Double click the icon for the computer to connect.
- When entering credentials use the format westernu.edu\username
Please ensure that you disconnect from the VPN when finished with the remote session by clicking the GlobalProtect icon and clicking Disconnect.
How to use and configure GlobalProtect (Android)
Client Download and Install
- Open the GlobalProtect app. If it is not currently on your device, install it from the Play Store

- Once downloaded and installed, open the app and allow the setup to complete.
- The app will ask to install a VPN Profile, allow this to be be set up and completed.
- When prompted for a portal address, enter remote.westernu.edu
- In the app, tap Connect
Connecting to WesternU
- Open the GlobalProtect app from the app tray and tap Connect
- If prompted for a portal enter remote.westernu.edu
- You will be prompted for your login information, make sure to enter your full WesternU email address. E.g. Techsupport@westernu.edu
- Enter your password and tap Sign In, you will then be prompted for a one-time password using your chosen MFA Method (Text, Authentication App, Etc.)
- Once connected the app will show a green checkmark and state Connected
Using Remote Desktop
- Download and install the Microsoft Remote Desktop app from the Play Store

- Once downloaded and installed, open the app and tap the + and select Desktop
- Enter the fully qualified name of the WesternU computer in the Computer field. E.g. TS001-P.westernu.edu and tap save
- Tap on the computer entry to connect
- When entering credentials use the format westernu.edu\username
Please ensure that you disconnect from the VPN when finished with the remote session by clicking the GlobalProtect icon and clicking Disconnect.
How to use and configure GlobalProtect (iPhone and iPad)
Client Download and Install
- Open the GlobalProtect app. If it is not currently on your device, install it from the iTunes App Store.

- Once downloaded and installed, open to the app and allow the setup to complete
- The app will ask to install a VPN profile, allow this to be set up and completed.
- When prompted for a portal address enter remote.westernu.edu
- In the app, tap Connect

Pro Tips
- If you have two monitors at home (or where ever you are working remotely from), you can enable use of all your monitors on your remote session...
Windows
- On the button of the Remote Desktop Connection application click arrow down icon to the left of Show Options
- Click on the Display tab
- Under Display Configuration select the box that says "Use all my monitors for the remote session"
