Question

  • How do I set up and use Dictation on a Windows computer?
  • The dictation feature allows you to speak to your Windows device to make it perform certain actions.

Turning on Dictation Commands

  1. In the search bar of your Windows device, type in Dictation


     
  2. Click on "Ease of Access dictation" to open the settings
     
  3. Turn on the Speech Recognition


     
  4. Set up Speech Recognition


     
  5. Choose what type of Microphone you are using


     
  6. Set up your microphone


     
  7. Adjust the volume of your microphone


     
  8. Click the Next button once your microphone is confirmed to be set up.
     
  9. Choose if you would like to enable or disable document review to help improve speech recognition accuracy.
     
  10. Choose an activation mode.

     
  11. Click Next to have your device "Run Speech Recognition at startup"



    If you choose manual activation mode:
     
  12. Press the Windows logo key + H to start dictation.


     
  13. Click on the Microphone button


     

Dictation Commands

Clear a selection Clear selection; unselect that
Delete the most recent dictation result or currently selected text Delete that; strike that
Delete a unit of text, such as the current word Delete word
Move the cursor to the first character after a specified word or phrase Go after that; move after word; go to the end of paragraph; move to the end of that
Move the cursor to the end of a unit of text Go after word; move after word; go tot he end of that; move to the end of the paragraph
Move the cursor backward by a unit of text Move back to the previous word; go to the end of that; move to the end of paragraph
Move the cursor to the first character before a specified word or phrase Go to the start of the word
Move the cursor to the start of a text unit Go before that; move to the start of that
Move the cursor forward to the next unit of text Move forward to the next word; go down to the next paragraph
Move the cursor to the end of a text unit Move to the end of the word; go down to the next paragraph
Enter one of the following key: Tab, Enter, End, Home, Page up, Page down, Backspace, Delete Tap Enter; press Backspace
Select a specific word or phrase Select word
Select the most recent dictation result Select that
Select a unit of text Select the next three words; select the previous two paragraphs
Turn spelling mode on and off Start spelling; stop spelling
