Student Accommodation for Exam Soft using Read & Write Application

The following is intended for Faculty and Staff to set up Exam Soft for use with the TextHelp Read& Write Application.

Without contacting your Exam Soft Representative

Temporary Fix to Allow Read & Write with Exam Soft Below are the steps initially sent out to CHS-NW faculty for a temporary procedure that were put into place which worked on the short term. The disadvantage of this option is that faculty would need to duplicate their exams and post the copy separately in a “CDHP Testing” course  that was created and placed the student in, which added more work and higher chance of error. First, aside from posting exams normally for the class, it is important for faculty to know that an additional copy of all exams also needs to be posted to the CDHP Testing course in ExamSoft; this will prevent unauthorized students from gaining access and completing the exam twice because only the screen reader accommodation-approved student will be enrolled in this placeholder course. Likewise, he will not be enrolled in your courses within ExamSoft to prevent access to exams twice; please keep this in mind for exam review sessions and let me know if this is an issue.

Second, the exam copy must be posted with the Secure setting off and the Block Internet on NonSecure Assessments setting is on; this will allow the screen reader to function, but it will also disable the internet:

Preferred Method to Allow Read & Write with Exam Soft

Contacting the TurnItIn Representative

These steps will essentially do the same thing, but it will skip the process of copying and posting a duplicate exam for accommodation needs. If you have a CSM representative at Turn It In (Exam Soft), you can contact them to apply the new accommodation setting in the college’s Exam Soft, or contact their support team (CHS-NW Representative, Rita Kallas at rkallas@turnitin.com).

CHS-NW contacted an ExamSoft representative assigned (presumably) to CHS-NW and asked for a new accommodation rule to be added for our PT program. We only had two accommodation settings previously for 1.5x and 2.0 time extensions.  CHS-NW requested a third rule to have a non-secure assessments setting enabled.

Once this rule was added by the representative, navigate to the Exam Takers list in ExamSoft and select the specific student who uses the Read & Write screen reader for testing. Within the student’s profile settings, set the new accommodation rule in the accommodation setting:

With this setting applied, a secure exam can be completed as non-secure by the student.
